Dutch Open Air Museum Arnhem

Those who visit the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum (Dutch Open Air Museum) in Arnhem and have an interest in antique pipes will be keen to visit Spaarstation Dingenliefde, one of the stops on the antique tram which runs over the museum grounds. This pavilion is open to public since 2004 and displays various specialist collections that show the diversity of Dutch private colletions, ranging from tireliers to fountain penns.

Central to this pavilion the Amsterdam Pipe Museum has a remarkable presentation. In what you might call a lounge room twelve tall display cases give an overview of the smoking pipe from all parts of the world. Besides European tobacco pipes of clay, porcelain, wood and meerschaum, a variety of exotic smoke instruments are exhibited. Chief Pipes from dark Africa, tobacco pipes decorated with colored beads from the Zulu women in South Africa, or a beautiful tobacco pipe in the shape of a standing rooster from Zambia. Of course, the peace pipe of Native Americans and the opium pipe from China are among the exhibited items.

A special feature in this exhibition is a video in which collector and researcher Don Duco, founder of the Amsterdam Pipe Museum, former Pijpenkabinet, explains his passion for collecting tobacco pipes. Seated on luxury leather seats, you can view this program on vintage televisions. During the program, six special pieces from the collection of the Amsterdam Pipe Museum are discussed and while listening one gets easily inflicted by the passion of Don Duco for pipe collecting.

Spaarstation Dingenliefde is part of the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem and is open to visitors during normal museum opening hours. The museum is dedicated to the Dutch culture and is one of the topics in the Netherlands.
